The everyday stock
You hear them on the evening news and at the café alike. Their internal syntax is ancient (dative, archaic imperative, infinitive) — don’t parse it: treat them as vocabulary.
- Η κατάσταση άλλαξε εν ριπή οφθαλμού.The situation changed in the blink of an eye.
- Έφυγαν άρον άρον, χωρίς καν να χαιρετήσουν.They left in a great hurry, without even saying goodbye.
- Παίζει πιάνο εξ απαλών ονύχων.She has played the piano since she was tiny.
- Οι διαπραγματεύσεις βρίσκονται επί ξυρού ακμής.The negotiations are on a knife’s edge.

How to use them without slipping
They are quoted AS IS: conjugate nothing, reorder nothing, add no article. One per sentence — two, and the text turns into parody. In formal speech and writing they hit the mark; in a text to a friend, they amuse.
- Συν τοις άλλοις, το κόστος αποδείχθηκε απαγορευτικό.On top of everything else, the cost proved prohibitive.
- Δεν ήταν ιδανική λύση, αλλά το μη χείρον βέλτιστον.It was not the ideal solution, but it was the lesser evil.
- Η πείρα είναι εκ των ων ουκ άνευ για τη θέση αυτή.Experience is a sine qua non for this post.
τοις, τω, ω: reading the relics
These little words are ancient datives: τοις = “to the (pl.)” (τοις εκατό: per cent), τω = “to the (sg.)” (δόξα τω Θεώ), εν + dative = “in” (εν τω μεταξύ). Spotting them is enough to decode any new expression of this family.
- Δόξα τω Θεώ, όλα πήγαν καλά.Thank God, everything went well.
- Το ποσοστό ανεργίας έπεσε στο εννέα τοις εκατό.The unemployment rate fell to nine per cent.
- Εν τω μεταξύ, κανείς δεν είχε καταλάβει τι συνέβαινε.Meanwhile, nobody had realised what was going on.
