Opening and closing formulas
The choice commits the whole text: you don’t open with Αξιότιμε and close with Φιλάκια.
- Αξιότιμε κύριε Δήμαρχε, σας γράφω σχετικά με την πλατεία της γειτονιάς μας.Dear Mr Mayor, I am writing to you regarding the square in our neighbourhood.

The essay structure (έκθεση)
Prologue (hook + statement), two or three body paragraphs (one argument each, opened by a connective), epilogue (synthesis + wider view). Examiners count connectives and progression — not big words.
- Τα τελευταία χρόνια το ζήτημα της κλιματικής αλλαγής βρίσκεται στο επίκεντρο του δημόσιου διαλόγου.In recent years the issue of climate change has been at the centre of public debate.
- Καταρχάς, η εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας δεν αποτελεί πλέον επιλογή αλλά αναγκαιότητα.First of all, saving energy is no longer a choice but a necessity.
- Συνοψίζοντας, η λύση δεν βρίσκεται μόνο στην τεχνολογία αλλά και στη νοοτροπία μας.To sum up, the solution lies not only in technology but also in our mindset.
Spoken vs written markers
In careful writing, replace: πολύ ωραία → ιδιαίτερα ενδιαφέρουσα, λοιπόν → επομένως, και → καθώς και, πράγμα που → γεγονός που. Keep μιλάω, παίρνω for dialogue. A formal email opens with a context sentence: Σας γράφω σχετικά με…
- Σας γράφω σχετικά με την αγγελία που δημοσιεύσατε στην ιστοσελίδα σας.I am writing to you regarding the advertisement you published on your website.
- Επομένως, η πρόταση δεν μπορεί να γίνει δεκτή στην παρούσα μορφή της.Consequently, the proposal cannot be accepted in its present form.
- Λοιπόν, τι λέτε; Πάμε ή το αφήνουμε για την άλλη βδομάδα;So, what do you say? Shall we go or leave it for next week?
