Compound words
γλυκόξινος, καρδιοχτύπι, χασομέρης: how two words make a third — and the ubiquitous -ο- that welds them.
The linking vowel -ο-
The first member drops its ending and -ο- makes the joint: νύχτα + πουλί → νυχτοπούλι, ψάρι + βάρκα → ψαρόβαρκα, κρασί + ποτήρι → κρασοπότηρο. The stress often climbs: θάλασσα + ταραχή → θαλασσοταραχή.
- Ένα νυχτοπούλι φώναζε όλη τη νύχτα.A night bird was calling all night long.
- Βγήκαμε στο πέλαγος με μια μικρή ψαρόβαρκα.We put out to sea in a small fishing boat.
- Η θαλασσοταραχή κράτησε δύο μέρες.The rough seas lasted two days.
The meaning patterns
Coordination: γλυκόξινος (sweet-and-sour), ανεβοκατεβαίνω (go up and down). Determination: ψαρόσουπα (FISH soup). Verb + object: χασομέρης (day-waster). Possession: καλόκαρδος (good-hearted), ανοιχτοχέρης (open-handed).
- Η σαλάτα ήταν γλυκόξινη.The salad was sweet and sour.
- Μας έφτιαξε μια νόστιμη ψαρόσουπα.She made us a delicious fish soup.
- Είναι χασομέρης· δεν τελειώνει ποτέ τίποτα.He’s a time-waster; he never finishes anything.
- Είναι καλόκαρδος άνθρωπος.He is a good-hearted man.
Expressive prefixoids: θεο-, κατα-, ολο-
Spoken Greek intensifies by compounding: θεότρελος (stark mad), κατάμαυρος (jet black), ολοκαίνουργιος (brand new), πεντακάθαρος (spotless), βαθυγάλαζος (deep blue). A Γ2 speaker understands them AND knows they are colloquial.
- Είναι θεότρελος, αλλά τον αγαπάμε.He’s stark raving mad, but we love him.
- Φόρεσε ένα κατάμαυρο παλτό.He put on a jet-black coat.
- Μας έδειξε το ολοκαίνουργιο αυτοκίνητό του.He showed us his brand-new car.
- Η κουζίνα έλαμπε, πεντακάθαρη.The kitchen was gleaming, spotless.
