Multiplicative and proportional numerals
διπλός or διπλάσιος? μονός, τριπλός, δεκαπλάσιος: the numeral family that doesn't count but multiplies.
Multiplicatives: -πλός
They describe WHAT the thing is made of, in how many layers: μονός (single), διπλός (double), τριπλός, τετραπλός, πολλαπλός. Ένα διπλό κρεβάτι. Μονό εισιτήριο, παρακαλώ. Τριπλό τζάμι για τον θόρυβο.
- Το δωμάτιο έχει ένα διπλό κρεβάτι.The room has a double bed.
- Ένα μονό εισιτήριο, παρακαλώ.A one-way ticket, please.
- Βάλαμε τριπλό τζάμι για τον θόρυβο.We put in triple glazing because of the noise.

Proportionals: -πλάσιος
They compare one QUANTITY to another: Το διαμέρισμα κοστίζει τα διπλάσια. Πληρώσαμε τριπλάσια από πέρσι. Η ζήτηση είναι δεκαπλάσια. A second term, if present, again comes with από. Classic trap: διπλό κρεβάτι (a double bed) ≠ διπλάσιο κρεβάτι (a bed twice as large).
- Το διαμέρισμα κοστίζει τα διπλάσια.The flat costs twice as much.
- Πληρώσαμε τριπλάσιο ποσό από πέρσι.We paid three times what we paid last year.
- Η ζήτηση είναι δεκαπλάσια από πέρσι.Demand is ten times higher than last year.
Where you actually meet them
Hotel: μονό ή διπλό δωμάτιο; Coffee: διπλός εσπρέσο. Press and economics: διπλάσιες τιμές, τριπλάσια κέρδη, πολλαπλάσιος κίνδυνος. Sport: διπλό (an away win). Both series decline like ordinary -ος/-η/-ο adjectives.

With the -πλάσιος series, and the second term introduced by «από»: «Πληρώσαμε τριπλάσιο ποσό από πέρσι» (we paid three times as much as last year), «Η ζήτηση είναι δεκαπλάσια» (demand is ten times higher). These adjectives decline like any ordinary -ος, -η, -ο adjective.
