Unreal conditionals
If I had money… The grammar of regrets and dreams.

Present unreal
αν + imperfect, θα + imperfect: Αν είχα χρόνο, θα ερχόμουν (if I had time, I would come). The imperfect isn’t about the past here — it marks unreality. The same θα ήθελα (I would like) is everyday politeness.
If I had time, I would come.
If I were you, I wouldn’t say it.
- Θα ήθελα ένα ποτήρι νερό, παρακαλώ.I would like a glass of water, please.
Past unreal
For regret: αν + pluperfect, θα + pluperfect. Αν είχες τηλεφωνήσει, θα είχα έρθει (if you had called, I would have come). In speech the imperfect often covers both: Αν το ήξερα, θα σου το έλεγα.
If you had called, I would have come.
If it hadn’t rained, we would have gone to the sea.
If I had known, I would have told you.

How do you say if I had time, I would come in Greek?
«Αν είχα χρόνο, θα ερχόμουν»: imperfect after «αν», imperfect after «θα». Here the imperfect is not about the past — it marks unreality. It is the same form as in the everyday «Θα ήθελα ένα ποτήρι νερό, παρακαλώ» (I would like a glass of water).
How do you express regret about the past in Greek?
With «αν» + pluperfect and «θα» + pluperfect: «Αν είχες τηλεφωνήσει, θα είχα έρθει» (if you had called, I would have come), «Αν δεν είχε βρέξει, θα είχαμε πάει στη θάλασσα». In speech the imperfect often covers both: «Αν το ήξερα, θα σου το έλεγα».
How do you use «μακάρι» in Greek?
Three degrees, depending on the tense that follows: «μακάρι» + subjunctive = a possible wish («Μακάρι να έρθει!» — may he come!); «μακάρι» + imperfect = an unreal wish («Μακάρι να ήμουν εκεί» — if only I were there); «μακάρι» + pluperfect = regret («Μακάρι να είχα προσπαθήσει περισσότερο»).
