Diminutives and augmentatives
καφεδάκι, σπιτάκι, καφεδάρα: affection, irony and admiration hidden inside a suffix.
The 'small' suffixes
-άκι (neuter, the most productive): σπίτι → σπιτάκι, καφές → καφεδάκι. -ούλα / -ίτσα (feminine): μαμά → μανούλα, ώρα → ωρίτσα, Ελένη → Ελενίτσα. -άκης / -ούλης (masculine, names): Γιώργος → Γιωργάκης. They express smallness OR affection — usually both.
- Μένουν σε ένα σπιτάκι έξω από το χωριό.They live in a little house just outside the village.
- Έλα, μανούλα μου, κάτσε λίγο.Come on, mummy dear, sit down a while.
- Ο Γιωργάκης πήγε για πρώτη φορά σχολείο.Little George went to school for the first time.
The 'big' suffixes: -άρα, -αράς
-άρα admires as much as it enlarges: ποδάρα (what a foot), φωνάρα (great voice), ταινιάρα (awesome film), καφεδάρα. -αράς makes the person with the strong trait: υπναράς (heavy sleeper), δουλευταράς (hard worker), γκρινιάρης (grumbler). Confidently colloquial register.
- Τι φωνάρα έχει αυτό το κορίτσι!What a voice that girl has!
- Είδαμε χθες μια ταινιάρα.We saw an amazing film yesterday.
- Ο Νίκος είναι μεγάλος υπναράς.Nikos is a real sleepyhead.
- Δουλεύει από το πρωί ως το βράδυ — σωστός δουλευταράς!He works from morning till night — a real workhorse!
Pragmatics: offering a καφεδάκι
Πάμε για ένα καφεδάκι; says nothing about cup size: the diminutive defuses, lightens the invitation, makes a request modest (μισό λεπτάκι, ένα τηλεφωνηματάκι). Irony flips it: Ωραίο σπιτάκι! in front of a villa. This pragmatic game is a Γ2 skill in its own right.

Does «ένα καφεδάκι» mean a small coffee?
No: the diminutive says nothing about size, it softens the invitation. «Πάμε για ένα καφεδάκι;» is simply friendlier than «καφέ». The same effect appears in «μισό λεπτάκι» (just a second) and «ένα τηλεφωνηματάκι» (a quick call).
What does the suffix «-άρα» express?
Admiration as much as size: «φωνάρα» (what a voice), «ταινιάρα» (a terrific film), «καφεδάρα» (a serious coffee). The related «-αράς» names the person: «υπναράς» (heavy sleeper), «δουλευταράς» (hard worker). Confidently colloquial register.
Can a diminutive be ironic?
Yes: «Ωραίο σπιτάκι!» said in front of a villa means exactly the opposite of “little house”. Reading that pragmatic flip is itself a Γ2-level skill.
