Talk About Hobbies in Greek: What You Like and How Often

Talking about hobbies lets you practise more than a list of activities. You can say what you enjoy, ask whether the other person shares that interest and add how often you do it. This invented exchange uses reading and walking. Change the activities only after you can follow the questions.

A conversation about free time

Τι σου αρέσει να κάνεις στον ελεύθερο χρόνο σου;What do you like doing in your free time?
Μου αρέσει να διαβάζω και να περπατάω. Εσένα;I like reading and walking. And you?
Μου αρέσει η μουσική. Παίζεις κάποιο όργανο;I like music. Do you play an instrument?
Όχι, αλλά ακούω μουσική κάθε μέρα.No, but I listen to music every day.
Περπατάς συχνά;Do you walk often?
Ναι, συνήθως το απόγευμα.Yes, usually in the afternoon.

Use a complete liking phrase

Μου αρέσει η μουσική means “I like music”. To name an activity, use Μου αρέσει να… followed by a suitable verb form: Μου αρέσει να διαβάζω, “I like reading”. Do not copy the English word order one word at a time. Practise the whole phrase with one activity first.

Change from your answer to a question

Μου refers to “me” in Μου αρέσει…. Σου refers to “you” in Τι σου αρέσει…; The question in this dialogue addresses one person informally. A polite or plural version is Τι σας αρέσει να κάνετε στον ελεύθερο χρόνο σας; Start by keeping each version together rather than mixing σου with κάνετε.

Do not confuse listening with playing

Ακούω μουσική means “I listen to music”. Παίζω κάποιο όργανο means “I play an instrument”. The speaker enjoys listening but answers no to playing an instrument. When discussing an interest, recognise the action as well as the topic: liking music does not tell you that someone performs it.

Add frequency or time of day

Κάθε μέρα means “every day”, συχνά “often” and συνήθως “usually”. Το απόγευμα means “in the afternoon”. In the dialogue, every day describes listening to music. The walking answer says usually in the afternoon; it does not specify an exact number of walks per week.

Check what the speakers say

  1. Name the first respondent’s two activities.
  2. Does that person say they play an instrument?
  3. Which activity happens every day in the dialogue?
  4. Does το απόγευμα tell you a frequency or a time of day?
See the answers

1. Reading and walking: διαβάζω και περπατάω. 2. No. 3. Listening to music. 4. A time of day: the afternoon. The dialogue gives no precise weekly walking schedule.

Find one shared interest

Choose two activities you can name. Say Μου αρέσει να… for one, then ask your partner Τι σου αρέσει να κάνεις; Add a follow-up such as Περπατάς συχνά; only if it fits their answer. Finish by summarising one fact you heard, so your practice includes listening as well as speaking.

Start with a short introduction. Ask for clarification when you miss a detail.
