Greek Definite Articles ο, η, το: Examples in Sentences

Knowing an article beside a noun is useful; now keep that pair together while reading a short message. This worksheet uses three singular nouns as sentence subjects. It does not ask you to choose every case form of the Greek article. For the reference table and plural forms, use the linked grammar lesson.

Three things on a café table

ο καφέςthe coffee — masculine
η σαλάταthe salad — feminine
το νερόthe water — neuter

These are grammatical genders, not descriptions of people. Learn each article with its noun. Do not decide that every object must take το. In this set, all three refer to things, yet they take different articles.

Read the message

Ο καφές είναι για τον Νίκο. Η σαλάτα είναι για την Άννα. Το νερό είναι για όλους.

The coffee is for Nikos. The salad is for Anna. The water is for everyone. The initial letters are capitalised because each pair begins a sentence. Ο is the capital form of ο; the same applies to Η/η and Το/το.

Read for both grammar and meaning

  1. Complete: ___ καφές είναι για τον Νίκο. Choose Ο, Η or Το.
  2. Complete: ___ σαλάτα είναι για την Άννα. Choose Ο, Η or Το.
  3. Complete: ___ νερό είναι για όλους. Choose Ο, Η or Το.
  4. Does the message reserve the water only for Nikos?
Answers and reasons

1. Ο, because the noun pair is ο καφές. 2. Η, because the pair is η σαλάτα. 3. Το, because the pair is το νερό. 4. No: για όλους means “for everyone”. The coffee, not the water alone, is assigned specifically to Nikos.

Notice a different article form without mixing the tasks

The message also contains τον Νίκο and την Άννα after για. Those are different grammatical forms from the subject pairs practised above. Do not replace them with ο Νίκος and η Άννα in this message. For this first worksheet, keep για τον Νίκο and για την Άννα as complete phrases. A table of dictionary forms does not mean articles stay unchanged in every position.

Change the allocation, keep the noun pair

Now give the coffee to Anna and the salad to Nikos. Keep the water for everyone. Write the three sentences before revealing the model below. The task changes who receives each item; it does not change the grammatical gender of coffee or salad.

Model for the changed order

Ο καφές είναι για την Άννα. Η σαλάτα είναι για τον Νίκο. Το νερό είναι για όλους.
