Στον, στην, στο in Greek: “To the / At the” Explained

You know the word for station, square or museum, but how do you put it after at or to in Greek? This worksheet starts from the noun with its article and builds the phrase you need. It also compares a present location with a destination: Greek can use σε for both, while the verb shows the difference.

Build three place phrases

Όνομασε + άρθρο
ο σταθμόςστον σταθμό
η πλατείαστην πλατεία
το μουσείοστο μουσείο

The preposition σε combines with the accusative article: σε + τον becomes στον, σε + την becomes στην, and σε + το becomes στο. The noun also takes its accusative form. Notice ο σταθμός becoming στον σταθμό: do not keep the final -ς in this phrase.

Where are you, or where are you going?

Είμαι στο μουσείο means I am at the museum. Πάω στο μουσείο means I am going to the museum. The place phrase stays the same; είμαι and πάω distinguish location from movement. English at and to do not require two different Greek prepositions in these examples.

Follow a meeting plan

Maria: Νίκο, είσαι στον σταθμό;
Nikos: Όχι, είμαι στην πλατεία, δίπλα στο μουσείο.
Maria: Εντάξει, πάω στην πλατεία τώρα.

Maria asks if Nikos is at the station. He is in the square, beside the museum, so she changes her destination. Listen for a short pause after Εντάξει.

  1. Where is Nikos now?
  2. Where is Maria going?
Check your answers

Nikos is στην πλατεία. Maria is going στην πλατεία. The same place phrase works with είμαι and πάω.

Choose from the Greek noun

Use ο σταθμός as your clue for στον σταθμό, η πλατεία for στην πλατεία and το μουσείο for στο μουσείο. Do not choose στον just because a place is large, or στο because it is a building. The grammatical gender of the Greek noun determines the article. These examples use a definite place; σε can also appear separately in other constructions.

Complete four sentences

  1. Use ο σταθμός: Είμαι ___ σταθμό. Choose στον, στην or στο.
  2. Use η πλατεία: Πάω ___ πλατεία.
  3. Use το μουσείο: Είμαι ___ μουσείο.
  4. Which sentence says you are going there: Είμαι στο μουσείο or Πάω στο μουσείο?
Show the answers

1. στον. 2. στην. 3. στο. 4. Πάω στο μουσείο. The verb changes the meaning; the place phrase remains στο μουσείο.

Change the destination

Say Πάω στον σταθμό, then change only the destination to the square: Πάω στην πλατεία. Now keep the square and say you are already there: Είμαι στην πλατεία. Work in two steps so you can notice whether you changed the noun phrase, the verb or both.

Consult the σε and από reference and use the phrases when asking for directions.
