Greek at the Beach: Ask for Facilities and Equipment

A short beach conversation can involve both a place and a quantity. This fictional dialogue asks where the showers are and whether two loungers are available. Notice that the reply changes the requested quantity. The exercise describes an imagined setting, not the facilities of a particular beach.

Read the beach dialogue

Συγγνώμη, πού είναι οι ντουζιέρες;Excuse me, where are the showers?
Δίπλα στο καφέ.Next to the café.
Έχετε μια ομπρέλα και δύο ξαπλώστρες;Do you have one parasol and two sun loungers?
Έχουμε μια ομπρέλα, αλλά μόνο μία ξαπλώστρα.We have one parasol, but only one sun lounger.
Εντάξει. Πού μπορώ να αγοράσω νερό;All right. Where can I buy water?
Στο καφέ.At the café.

Name the equipment you need

Ομπρέλα means umbrella or parasol; at the beach it refers here to a parasol. Ξαπλώστρα is a sun lounger. The customer asks for μια ομπρέλα και δύο ξαπλώστρες, one parasol and two loungers. In the answer, μόνο μία means only one. The number available is different from the number requested.

Ask where a facility is

Πού είναι; asks “Where is?” or “Where are?”. Οι ντουζιέρες means the showers, and δίπλα στο καφέ means next to the café. The reply does not say the showers are inside it. Compare δίπλα στο καφέ with στο καφέ, at the café, which appears in the answer about buying water.

Make a request without guessing the price

Έχετε; asks “Do you have?”. Availability does not by itself tell you a price or whether equipment is included in another purchase. Πόσο κοστίζει η ομπρέλα; asks “How much does the parasol cost?”. In this exercise no price or rental period is given, so you cannot calculate a total from the conversation.

Check the details

  1. Where are the showers in the example?
  2. How many loungers does the customer ask for?
  3. How many loungers are available?
  4. Does the conversation give a price for the parasol?
Show the answers

1. Next to the café. 2. Two. 3. Only one. 4. No price is stated.

Try a different reply

Imagine the customer needs both loungers and does not accept one. Say Χρειάζομαι δύο ξαπλώστρες, “I need two sun loungers.” Then ask Υπάρχει άλλη μία; — “Is there one more?”. This adds a new question; the original dialogue does not tell you its answer.
