Shopping for Clothes in Greek: Ask for a Size and Try It On

Buying clothes involves more than naming a garment. You need to explain what you want, ask to try it on and say whether it fits. This fictional dialogue follows one shopper looking for a blue shirt. The price is invented for language practice; it is not a claim about prices in Greece.

A clothes-shop dialogue

Καλημέρα! Ψάχνω ένα πουκάμισο.Good morning! I’m looking for a shirt.
Τι μέγεθος φοράτε;What size do you wear?
Μεσαίο. Έχετε αυτό σε μπλε;Medium. Do you have this in blue?
Βεβαίως. Θέλετε να το δοκιμάσετε;Of course. Would you like to try it on?
Ναι, πού είναι τα δοκιμαστήρια;Yes, where are the fitting rooms?
Στο βάθος, δεξιά.At the back, on the right.
Μου είναι λίγο μικρό. Έχετε μεγαλύτερο;It’s a little small for me. Do you have a larger one?
Ναι, ορίστε.Yes, here you are.
Αυτό μου κάνει. Πόσο κοστίζει;This one fits me. How much does it cost?
Τριάντα ευρώ.Thirty euros.

Ask for a garment and size

Ψάχνω ένα πουκάμισο means “I’m looking for a shirt”. Learn the noun with its article: το πουκάμισο. Τι μέγεθος φοράτε; asks about the size you wear, using a polite or plural form. The short answer Μεσαίο means medium here. You can also say Δεν ξέρω το μέγεθός μου — “I don’t know my size”.

Ask about colour and try it on

Έχετε αυτό σε μπλε; asks whether this item is available in blue. Σε μπλε lets you request a colour without building a longer description. Να το δοκιμάσω; means “May I try it on?” The το refers to the neuter noun πουκάμισο. The fitting rooms are τα δοκιμαστήρια; the answer Στο βάθος, δεξιά directs you to the back, on the right.

Say how it fits

Μου είναι λίγο μικρό means “It is a little small for me”. For this shirt, Μεγαλύτερο asks for a larger one. These neuter endings match πουκάμισο; do not copy them unchanged for every garment. Αυτό μου κάνει means “This one fits me” in this context. It does not mean you have already paid.

Separate size from price

Πόσο κοστίζει; asks how much it costs, not what size it is. The answer Τριάντα ευρώ gives a price of thirty euros. The dialogue does not say which payment method is accepted or whether the purchase is completed. Ask those questions separately if you need the information.

Check your understanding

  1. What garment and colour does the shopper want?
  2. Where are the fitting rooms?
  3. Why does the shopper request a larger size?
  4. What is the price, and has payment been confirmed?
See the answers

1. A blue shirt. 2. At the back, on the right. 3. The first shirt is a little small. 4. Thirty euros; no payment is described.

Practise a different fit

Replay the dialogue with a black shirt: Έχετε αυτό σε μαύρο; Then change the problem to Μου είναι λίγο μεγάλο — “It is a little big for me” — and ask Έχετε μικρότερο; Keep the garment the same while practising these endings. Finish by asking the price, without inventing a completed payment.
