Places in Town in Greek: Post Office, Bakery, Library

A city vocabulary list becomes useful when you can ask where a place is and recognise the landmark in the reply. This activity uses an imaginary neighbourhood. Its locations are invented for practice, not directions to real businesses. First identify the destination, then locate it using the answer.

Read the neighbourhood dialogue

Πού είναι το ταχυδρομείο;Where is the post office?
Είναι δίπλα στην τράπεζα.It is next to the bank.
Και ο φούρνος;And the bakery?
Είναι απέναντι από το πάρκο.It is opposite the park.
Η βιβλιοθήκη είναι κοντά;Is the library near?
Ναι, είναι πίσω από το μουσείο.Yes, it is behind the museum.

Match a place to a simple errand

Το ταχυδρομείο is the post office; ο φούρνος is the bakery; η βιβλιοθήκη is the library. Practise choosing a destination: sending a letter suggests the post office, buying bread suggests the bakery, and borrowing a book suggests the library. These are vocabulary associations, not promises about the services or opening hours of a particular branch.

Learn the landmarks with articles

The replies mention η τράπεζα, the bank; το πάρκο, the park; and το μουσείο, the museum. Keep the article when learning each name. In δίπλα στην τράπεζα, στην combines σε with the feminine accusative article. In απέναντι από το πάρκο and πίσω από το μουσείο, το accompanies the neuter noun. Copy the full phrase before replacing its landmark.

Ask about a new destination

Πού είναι το ταχυδρομείο; asks where the post office is. You can change the destination: Πού είναι ο φούρνος; or Πού είναι η βιβλιοθήκη; Notice that the article changes with the noun. The shortened question Και ο φούρνος; means “And the bakery?” in a conversation where the location question is already understood.

Separate location from opening hours

Η βιβλιοθήκη είναι κοντά; asks whether the library is near. It does not ask whether it is open. The answer places it behind the museum but gives no distance in metres. To ask about opening time, use Τι ώρα ανοίγει; — “What time does it open?” A location answer cannot tell you whether you can complete your errand now.

Check the destinations

  1. Where is the post office in the fictional dialogue?
  2. Which place is opposite the park?
  3. Is the library in front of or behind the museum?
  4. Does the dialogue state any opening hours?
See the answers

1. Next to the bank. 2. The bakery. 3. Behind the museum. 4. No; it gives locations, not opening hours.

Draw and ask

Draw three separate pairs of places: post office and bank, bakery and park, library and museum. Label them in Greek. Do not invent connections between the pairs. Then ask and answer Πού είναι ο φούρνος; without looking at the translation. Finally replace the bakery with the library and choose the matching answer from the dialogue.
