Greek music vocabulary: instruments, performers and a programme

Music can give you a reason to use Greek beyond naming your favourite song. This beginner activity asks you to identify who plays, who sings and what a short programme actually says. The event is invented; it is not a concert listing or a quotation from a song.

Start with a few useful words

  • η μουσική — music
  • το τραγούδι — a song
  • το πιάνο — a piano
  • το βιολί — a violin
  • η κιθάρα — a guitar
  • η συναυλία — a concert
  • το κοινό — the audience

Keep the article with each noun. These are dictionary forms; articles can change inside a sentence. For example, στη συναυλία means “at/to the concert” according to the sentence. Do not translate το κοινό word by word as though it referred to a musical instrument.

Read the invented programme

Το Σάββατο έχουμε μια μουσική βραδιά στη μικρή αίθουσα. Η Άννα παίζει πιάνο και ο Νίκος βιολί. Η Ελένη τραγουδάει. Δεν υπάρχει κιθάρα στο πρόγραμμα. Μετά τη συναυλία, οι τρεις μουσικοί μιλούν με το κοινό.

Identify the action

Παίζει names playing an instrument here: Η Άννα παίζει πιάνο. Τραγουδάει names singing: Η Ελένη τραγουδάει. The second sentence omits a repeated verb: ο Νίκος βιολί means that Nikos plays the violin. It does not say that Eleni plays an instrument. Δεν υπάρχει introduces something absent from the programme.

Check the information

  1. Who plays the piano?
  2. Which instrument does Nikos play?
  3. Is a guitar included in the programme?
  4. Does the text identify the style of music they perform?
Answers and reasons

1. Anna. 2. The violin. 3. No: Δεν υπάρχει κιθάρα στο πρόγραμμα. 4. No. Instruments alone do not establish a genre; the text does not name one.

Describe a preference without inventing facts

You can add a personal response: Μου αρέσει το πιάνο, “I like the piano.” Keep your opinion separate from the programme’s information. “I would like to hear a guitar” is not the same as saying that a guitar is present. If you discuss a recording, name only instruments you can identify, or ask: Τι όργανο είναι αυτό; — “What instrument is that?”

Write a different programme

Change two performers’ roles and add the guitar. Write three short Greek sentences. Check that the verb matches the action: use παίζει for an instrument and τραγουδάει for singing. Then ask a partner two questions whose answers appear in your text. Your new version is your own fictional programme, not a correction of the original.
