How to Ask for Directions in Greek: Left, Right, Landmarks

The question Πού είναι…; is easy to reuse, but understanding the reply takes practice. This guide focuses on three direction words and a landmark. The route below is fictional: use it to rehearse the language, not as directions to a real station.

Six phrases to recognise

  • Πού είναι ο σταθμός; — Where is the station?
  • Πηγαίνετε ευθεία. — Go straight ahead.
  • Στρίψτε δεξιά. — Turn right.
  • Στρίψτε αριστερά. — Turn left.
  • Είναι απέναντι από το φαρμακείο. — It is opposite the pharmacy.
  • Μπορείτε να μου το δείξετε στον χάρτη; — Can you show it to me on the map?

A short exchange

Συγγνώμη, πού είναι ο σταθμός;Excuse me, where is the station?
Πηγαίνετε ευθεία και στρίψτε δεξιά.Go straight ahead and turn right.
Δεξιά ή αριστερά;Right or left?
Δεξιά. Είναι απέναντι από το φαρμακείο.Right. It is opposite the pharmacy.
Ευχαριστώ πολύ.Thank you very much.

Three words to hear first

Ευθεία means “straight ahead”, δεξιά “right” and αριστερά “left”. In Πηγαίνετε ευθεία and Στρίψτε δεξιά, the verb gives the action and the next word gives the direction. If you recognise only the direction word at first, repeat it as a question to check your understanding.

Use the landmark to confirm

Απέναντι από means “opposite” or “across from”. In απέναντι από το φαρμακείο, the pharmacy is a landmark, not the destination. Distinguish it from δίπλα στο φαρμακείο, “next to the pharmacy”. A single small phrase changes the relationship between the two places.

Ask for a map or a repetition

Μπορείτε να μου το δείξετε στον χάρτη; asks the person to show the place on a map. If the reply contains too many steps, ask Μπορείτε να το επαναλάβετε πιο αργά; — “Can you repeat that more slowly?” You can also check just one detail: Δεξιά ή αριστερά;

Check the route language

  1. Which word means “straight ahead”: ευθεία or αριστερά?
  2. You hear Στρίψτε δεξιά. Which way do you turn?
  3. In the dialogue, is the pharmacy the destination or a landmark?
  4. Ask the speaker to show the place on the map.
See the answers

1. ευθεία. 2. Right. 3. A landmark; the destination is the station. 4. Μπορείτε να μου το δείξετε στον χάρτη; The map request is useful even when you understand some of the spoken directions.

Draw a practice route

Draw a station, a pharmacy and two streets on paper. Give the route using ευθεία, δεξιά and αριστερά. Then change the station from opposite the pharmacy to next to it and say the final sentence again. This checks whether you understand the spatial phrase rather than just remember the dialogue.

Other ways to ask the way

Πού είναι…; works for any place. These variants are more everyday, more polite or help you judge the distance:

  • Πώς πάω στον σταθμό; — How do I get to the station? (everyday)
  • Ξέρετε πού είναι το μουσείο; — Do you know where the museum is? (polite opener)
  • Υπάρχει φαρμακείο εδώ κοντά; — Is there a pharmacy near here?
  • Είναι μακριά; — Is it far?
  • Είναι κοντά; — Is it close?
  • Στο δεύτερο στενό δεξιά. — The second side street on the right (a reply you may hear).

Common mistakes

  • Πού είναι σταθμός; → Πού είναι ο σταθμός;: Greek keeps the article before the place.
  • απέναντι το φαρμακείο → απέναντι από το φαρμακείο: απέναντι needs από before the landmark.
  • δίπλα το φαρμακείο → δίπλα στο φαρμακείο: δίπλα is followed by σε, merged with the article: στο, στη, στον.

Questions about directions in Greek

How do you say “Where is…?” in Greek? Πού είναι plus the article and the place: Πού είναι η τράπεζα; Write πού with an accent when it means “where”.

How do you say “left” and “right” in Greek? Αριστερά is left and δεξιά is right. Straight ahead is ευθεία.

How do you ask “How do I get to…?” in Greek? Use Πώς πάω plus σε and the article: Πώς πάω στον σταθμό; The answer usually starts with a direction.
