Making Plans in Greek: Arrange a Meeting and Change the Time

A conversation can mention several times without agreeing on all of them. When arranging a meeting, listen for the final accepted day, time and place. This exercise starts with a suggestion that does not work, then changes the plan. Your task is to keep a clear record of the agreement.

Read the conversation

Άννα: Θέλεις να βρεθούμε την Πέμπτη στις έξι το απόγευμα;
Νίκος: Δεν μπορώ την Πέμπτη. Την Παρασκευή;
Άννα: Ναι, αλλά τελειώνω τη δουλειά στις έξι. Μπορούμε στις επτά;
Νίκος: Ωραία. Μπροστά στη βιβλιοθήκη;
Άννα: Ναι, την Παρασκευή στις επτά, μπροστά στη βιβλιοθήκη.

Anna suggests Thursday at six. Nikos cannot meet on Thursday and suggests Friday instead. Anna accepts Friday but asks for seven because she finishes work at six. Nikos accepts seven and proposes meeting in front of the library. Anna confirms the complete plan.

Three details to keep separate

Την Παρασκευή gives the day, on Friday. Στις επτά gives the time, at seven. Μπροστά στη βιβλιοθήκη gives the meeting point, in front of the library. The conversation does not put the meeting inside the library. For this fictional evening plan, seven means 19:00; in another conversation, clarify morning or evening if the context does not establish it.

Changing a proposal

Δεν μπορώ την Πέμπτη means I cannot on Thursday; it rejects that day, not every possible meeting. Την Παρασκευή; proposes an alternative. Μπορούμε στις επτά; asks whether seven works. Ωραία accepts the proposal in this context. Treat the final confirmation as a useful check against the earlier suggestions.

Check the final agreement

  1. Which day is accepted: Thursday or Friday?
  2. Which time is accepted: six or seven?
  3. Are they meeting inside the library or in front of it?
  4. Complete the final time: Την Παρασκευή, στις ___, μπροστά στη βιβλιοθήκη.
Show the answers

1. Friday, την Παρασκευή. 2. Seven, στις επτά. 3. In front of the library. 4. επτά. Thursday and six belong to earlier proposals, not the final agreement.

Send a short confirmation

Write the agreed details as one message: Την Παρασκευή στις επτά, μπροστά στη βιβλιοθήκη. Then imagine the other person asks Στις οκτώ; Reply with the intended time: Στις επτά, όχι στις οκτώ. Practise changing just one detail so that the rest of the arrangement stays clear.

Review questions about times and practise writing a short Greek message.
