Greek Indefinite Articles ένας, μία, ένα: How to Use Them

Imagine showing someone three pictures: a friend, a bag and a book. You want to introduce each item without saying that the listener already knows which one you mean. This worksheet practises ένας, μία and ένα in simple identification sentences. Learn the noun’s gender first, then choose the matching form.

Identify three pictures

Αυτός είναι ένας φίλος.
Αυτή είναι μία τσάντα.
Αυτό είναι ένα βιβλίο.

This is a friend. This is a bag. This is a book. Here φίλος refers to a male friend, τσάντα is a feminine noun and βιβλίο is neuter. Grammatical gender belongs to the Greek noun: a bag is not a person, but τσάντα still uses the feminine form μία.

Use the known noun as your clue

If you learned ο φίλος, choose ένας φίλος in this sentence pattern. Η τσάντα leads to μία τσάντα, and το βιβλίο to ένα βιβλίο. The article is chosen from the Greek noun’s gender, not from the equivalent word in another language. The feminine form also appears as μια; this worksheet consistently writes μία.

Keep the sentence pattern in view

These examples use nominative forms after Αυτός είναι, Αυτή είναι and Αυτό είναι. They are not a universal substitution table for every sentence. Articles change with case: for example, Έχω έναν φίλο uses έναν. First master the identification pattern here; use the reference lesson when you move to other sentence roles.

See the pictures in a conversation

Maria: Ποιος είναι αυτός;
Nikos: Αυτός είναι ένας φίλος μου.
Maria: Και τι είναι αυτό;
Nikos: Αυτό είναι ένα βιβλίο. Αυτή είναι μία τσάντα.

Maria asks who the person is, then what the object is. Nikos introduces a friend, a book and a bag. Listen to the different articles before the three nouns; the last two objects do not take the same form.

Which form introduces the friend? Which form introduces the bag? Why does the book use a different form from the bag?

Check the exchange

A friend: ένας φίλος. A bag: μία τσάντα. A book: ένα βιβλίο. The Greek nouns have different grammatical genders.

Choose an article

  1. Use ο φίλος as your clue: Αυτός είναι ___ φίλος.
  2. Use η τσάντα: Αυτή είναι ___ τσάντα.
  3. Use το βιβλίο: Αυτό είναι ___ βιβλίο.
  4. Use η πόλη: Αυτή είναι ___ πόλη.
Show the answers

1. ένας: φίλος is masculine. 2. μία: τσάντα is feminine. 3. ένα: βιβλίο is neuter. 4. μία: πόλη is feminine, even though it does not end in -α.

Describe a new picture

Draw or find a picture of a book and say Αυτό είναι ένα βιβλίο. Then use a bag and say Αυτή είναι μία τσάντα. Cover the sentences and repeat them from the pictures. For a new noun, check its article instead of guessing its gender from the object’s appearance.

Review Greek articles and gender, then practise describing familiar spaces in the home guide.
