Adjectives: καλός -ή -ό, ωραίος -α -ο

One adjective, three forms — and the one-euro question: feminine in -η or in -α? The answer fits in a single letter.

The base pattern: καλός, καλή, καλό

The adjective copies the noun's gender: ο καλός φίλος , η καλή ιδέα , το καλό παιδί . Plural: οι καλοί φίλοι, οι καλές ιδέες, τα καλά παιδιά. It sits before the noun, between article and noun.

Feminine in -α: ωραίος, ωραία, ωραίο

If the -ος ending follows a VOWEL, the feminine is in -α: ωραίος → ωραία, νέος → νέα, κρύος → κρύα, παλιός → παλιά. After a consonant it is -η: μικρός → μικρή, καλός → καλή. Memorise the stars: ωραία, νέα, κρύα, παλιά.

The adjective after είμαι

After είμαι the adjective agrees with the SUBJECT: Ο καφές είναι ζεστός. Η σούπα είναι ζεστή. Το ψωμί είναι ζεστό. Τα παιδιά είναι κουρασμένα. Same agreement — just no article before the adjective.

  • Ο καφές είναι ζεστός.The coffee is hot.

When is the feminine of a Greek adjective «-η» and when «-α»?

One letter decides: if «-ος» follows a VOWEL, the feminine is «-α» — «ωραίος» gives «ωραία», «νέος» gives «νέα», «παλιός» gives «παλιά». After a consonant it is «-η»: «μικρός» gives «μικρή», «καλός» gives «καλή».
