Adverbs in -ως and -α: two forms, two meanings
Απλά and απλώς do not mean the same thing. A pair of endings that changes the meaning, not just the tone.

The pairs that change meaning
Some pairs are true minimal pairs: the -α form keeps the concrete sense, the -ως form takes an abstract or discourse sense. Confusing them is one of the most noticeable errors in writing.
- Μίλησε απλά, για να τον καταλάβουν όλοι.He spoke simply, so everyone would understand.
- Απλώς ήθελα να βοηθήσω.I simply wanted to help.

| απλά | με απλό τρόπο | απλώς | μόνο, τίποτε άλλο |
| ακριβά | σε υψηλή τιμή | ακριβώς | με ακρίβεια, precisely |

| ευχάριστα | με ευχαρίστηση | ευχαρίστως | δέχομαι πρόθυμα |

Comment adverbs
At this level the adverb stops modifying the verb and starts commenting on the whole sentence: ενδεχομένως, προφανώς, δυστυχώς, ουσιαστικά, πρακτικά. They sit in front, between commas, and set the writer’s degree of commitment — a central tool of academic prose.

Често задавани въпроси
What is the difference between απλά and απλώς?
«Απλά» keeps the concrete sense “in a simple way”: «Μίλησε απλά, για να τον καταλάβουν όλοι» (he spoke plainly so everyone would understand). «Απλώς» means “merely, just”: «Απλώς ήθελα να βοηθήσω».
Why do some Greek adverbs have two forms?
Because the ending separates two meanings, not two tones: the -α form stays concrete, the -ως form takes an abstract or discourse sense. Confusing them is one of the most noticeable errors in writing.
What are comment adverbs such as προφανώς?
They no longer modify the verb but the whole sentence: «ενδεχομένως» (possibly), «προφανώς» (obviously), «δυστυχώς», «ουσιαστικά». Placed in front between commas, they set the writer’s degree of commitment — a central tool of academic prose.
