How to Pronounce μπ, ντ and γκ in Greek

Two written consonants can work together when you read a Greek word. In this worksheet, focus on μπ, ντ and γκ at the beginning of six familiar words. Mark the pair before you read the rest. This is initial-word practice, not a rule for every occurrence of these letters inside a word.

New to the Greek letters? Start with the complete Greek alphabet guide: all 24 letters, their names and how they sound.

Read the six words

μπάλαball
μπλεblue
ντομάταtomato
ντουλάπαwardrobe
γκολgoal
γκαράζgarage

Start with one consonant sound

In these examples, initial μπ represents /b/, ντ represents /d/ and γκ represents /g/. These are broadly comparable to the first consonants of English ball, door and goal. Do not insert a vowel between the two Greek letters. Μπάλα begins with the pair μπ, not a separate spoken μ followed by a separately named π.

Do not replace the pair with a lookalike

Greek β and δ are different from μπ and ντ. Β represents a v sound, while δ is a voiced dental fricative, broadly like th in English this. The letter γ is also different from γκ. Recognise the written pair as part of the word; do not substitute a single letter because its capital shape resembles an English B or D.

Keep the rest of the word together

In μπλε, λ comes after μπ; the initial pair is still μπ. In ντουλάπα, the first pair is ντ, followed by the vowel combination ου. In γκολ, γκ is followed by ο and λ. Grouping the first two letters helps you begin, but you still need the remaining letters and the stress mark to read the complete word.

Check your reading

  1. Which two words in the table begin with μπ?
  2. What is the initial consonant pair in ντουλάπα?
  3. Does μπλε begin with a separately pronounced μ syllable?
  4. Which pair begins both γκολ and γκαράζ?
Show the answers

1. μπάλα and μπλε. 2. ντ; ου follows it. 3. No: μπ works together, followed by λ. 4. γκ.

Sort, then read

Make three columns labelled μπ, ντ and γκ. Copy the six words into the matching columns without their translations. Read each column, then mix the words and try again. If you meet these pairs inside a new word, check that word’s pronunciation rather than assuming this initial-word activity describes every position.

Review the Greek alphabet lesson and practise vowel combinations such as ου.
