Greek Γ2 Writing: Adjust Register Without Changing the Facts

Formal writing is not simply a search for longer words. The reader must still understand what has happened, what remains uncertain and what to do next. This C2-oriented revision activity uses an invented event notice; it is not an official exam task.

Your audience and purpose

You organise a public discussion. A colleague sends the message below. Write a notice to the registered participants. They need a clear instruction about Friday and an accurate statement about the possible replacement date. Do not supply an exact time, a safety assessment or a confirmed booking: none appears in the source.

The source message

A possible notice

What changed—and what did not

The informal instruction Πες στους άλλους becomes a direct, courteous request to participants: Παρακαλούμε να μην προσέλθετε. The wording changes, but Monday remains provisional. The electrical inspection is a reason for the room’s unavailability, not proof of a dangerous defect. The source gives no inspection result.

Check the claims

  1. Can the notice say the discussion will definitely take place on Monday?
  2. Does an electrical inspection prove that the installation is unsafe?
  3. Which sentence tells participants what to do on Friday?
  4. Would adding “at 18:00” make this notice more accurate?
Answers and reasons

1. No. Monday is being considered and awaits confirmation. 2. No. The source mentions an inspection, not a finding. 3. 4. No. No time is supplied; precision means supported detail, not invented detail.

Revise it yourself

Write a shorter formal notice that preserves the Friday cancellation, the unconfirmed Monday option and the promise of another update. Then write a friendly message for a colleague using the same facts. Compare the two: change the address and wording, but not the degree of certainty. Remove any repeated explanation. If you use a passive construction, check that readers can still identify the action they must take.

Continue practising

The free C2 vocabulary exercise practises semantic distinctions and precise word choice; it is a related task, not another notice-writing assignment. Create an account to save progress. This guide does not prescribe an official word count or predict an exam score.
