How to Buy Bread in Greek: Bakery Phrases and Dialogue

A bakery order combines three useful skills: naming an item, saying how many you want, and understanding an alternative. This guide practises all three in a short conversation. Begin with the vocabulary, then cover the translation and try answering the person serving you.

Six words for the order

  • ψωμί — bread
  • τυρόπιτα — cheese pie
  • κουλούρι — bread ring
  • ένα — one (neuter)
  • δύο — two
  • σακούλα — bag

When your first choice is unavailable

Καλημέρα! Θα ήθελα ένα ψωμί και δύο τυρόπιτες, παρακαλώ.Good morning! I would like a loaf of bread and two cheese pies, please.
Δεν έχουμε τυρόπιτες. Θέλετε σπανακόπιτες;We do not have cheese pies. Would you like spinach pies?
Ναι, δύο σπανακόπιτες, παρακαλώ.Yes, two spinach pies, please.
Θέλετε σακούλα;Would you like a bag?
Ναι, ευχαριστώ. Πόσο κάνουν όλα μαζί;Yes, thank you. How much is everything together?

Change the quantity, not just the number

Compare μία τυρόπιτα with δύο τυρόπιτες: after “two”, the noun is plural. Likewise, ένα κουλούρι becomes δύο κουλούρια. In ένα ψωμί, ψωμί can mean a loaf of bread in this ordering context. Learn these short combinations together rather than adding a number to an unchanged noun.

Recognise the alternative

Δεν έχουμε… means “We do not have…”. Listen for the next item after Θέλετε…; (“Would you like…?”). You can accept with Ναι, παρακαλώ or decline with Όχι, ευχαριστώ. You can also change the whole order: Τότε, μόνο ένα ψωμί, παρακαλώ — “Then just a loaf of bread, please.”

Point and ask

If you do not know an item’s name, ask Τι είναι αυτό; — “What is this?” To ask about the filling, use Τι έχει μέσα; — “What does it have inside?” These questions invite an explanation; do not assume you will understand every ingredient immediately. Ask the person to repeat if needed: Μπορείτε να το επαναλάβετε;

Complete the order

  1. Complete the plural: μία τυρόπιτα → δύο ___.
  2. You hear Δεν έχουμε τυρόπιτες. Are cheese pies available?
  3. You accept the spinach pies and want two. Give a short reply.
  4. Ask the total price using the phrase from the dialogue.
See possible answers

1. τυρόπιτες. 2. No: δεν makes the statement negative. 3. Δύο σπανακόπιτες, παρακαλώ. 4. Πόσο κάνουν όλα μαζί; The last question asks for the total, not the price of just one item.

Rehearse a second order

Repeat the conversation, but decline the spinach pies and buy only bread. Then practise ordering δύο κουλούρια instead. Keep the greeting and polite ending while changing the item and quantity. Practise the response to an unavailable item as carefully as the first sentence.

Other ways to order at the bakery

The dialogue uses Θα ήθελα…, which is always polite. At a busy counter, shorter requests are just as normal:

  • Ένα ψωμί, παρακαλώ. — A loaf of bread, please (the shortest version).
  • Μου δίνετε δύο κουλούρια; — Could you give me two bread rings? (everyday request)
  • Θα ήθελα μισό κιλό ψωμί. — I would like half a kilo of bread.
  • Ένα ολικής άλεσης, παρακαλώ. — A wholemeal one, please.
  • Αυτό εδώ, παρακαλώ. — This one here, please (while pointing).
  • Να σας το κόψω; — Shall I slice it for you? (a question you may hear)

Common mistakes

  • δύο τυρόπιτα → δύο τυρόπιτες: after a number above one, the noun is plural.
  • ένα τυρόπιτα → μία τυρόπιτα: τυρόπιτα is feminine, so “one” is μία (or μια). Ένα goes with neuter nouns such as ψωμί and κουλούρι.
  • Πόσο κάνει όλα μαζί; → Πόσο κάνουν όλα μαζί;: several items need the plural verb κάνουν.
