Πάω or πηγαίνω? How to Say “I Go” in Greek

You may hear both πάω and πηγαίνω when someone talks about going somewhere. Practise recognising the person, destination and time in a short exchange before building a reply of your own. This activity uses everyday movement, not every figurative meaning of the verb.

Read a plan between two friends

Άννα: Πού πας τώρα;
Νίκος: Πάω στη βιβλιοθήκη. Εσύ;
Άννα: Πηγαίνω στο μάθημα. Αύριο πάμε μαζί στο καφέ;
Νίκος: Ναι, μετά το μάθημα.

Anna asks where Nikos is going now. He is going to the library and asks about her. Anna is going to class and suggests going to the café together tomorrow. Nikos agrees and specifies after the lesson. The dialogue does not give an exact clock time.

Recognise short and longer present forms

I goπάω / πηγαίνω
you go — one personπας / πηγαίνεις
he or she goesπάει / πηγαίνει
we goπάμε / πηγαίνουμε
you go — plural or politeπάτε / πηγαίνετε
they goπάνε / πηγαίνουν

These are useful present-tense pairs. Do not learn a false rule that πάω only describes one trip while πηγαίνω only describes a habit. In the exchange, both describe destinations now. With a future time word, a present form can also express a plan, as in Anna’s question about tomorrow.

Keep the destination with the verb

Πάω στη βιβλιοθήκη. Πηγαίνω στο μάθημα. Πάμε στο καφέ.

The three destinations are the library, the lesson and the café. Learn στη βιβλιοθήκη and στο μάθημα as complete phrases rather than treating στο as the form for every noun. Πού πας; asks where you are going; Πώς πάει; asks how it is going. The question word changes what a suitable answer needs to tell the listener.

Check who goes where

  1. Where is Nikos going now?
  2. Is Anna going to the same place as Nikos now?
  3. Does πάμε in Anna’s question mean I go or we go?
  4. Do they agree on a specific clock time for tomorrow’s café visit?
Answers

1. To the library: στη βιβλιοθήκη. 2. No. She is going to class: στο μάθημα. 3. We go; here Anna proposes going together. 4. No. They agree on after the lesson, but do not state an hour.

Change the person, keep the destination

Start with Πάω στο καφέ. Change it to we using the short form, then write the same we statement with the longer form. Finally, turn the short version into a question inviting someone to go with you.

Possible forms

Πάμε στο καφέ. Πηγαίνουμε στο καφέ. Πάμε στο καφέ;

The first two are statements. In this invitation context, the last means “Shall we go to the café?” The Greek question mark is ;. Spoken intonation also matters; do not assume that every occurrence of πάμε is a question.

Write a reply that fits the question

A friend asks Πού πας τώρα; Reply with your destination. Then ask whether they would like to go to the café tomorrow. Compare your reply with the dialogue: did you give a place rather than just say you are fine? Did you distinguish now from tomorrow?
