Before, After and Later in Greek: Put Activities in Order

Knowing a clock time is different from knowing the order of events. This activity helps you describe what happens before a lesson, after it and later in the day. Read the fictional routine, then arrange the activities without inventing times the text does not give.

Read the routine

Πριν από το μάθημα, πίνω έναν καφέ.Before the lesson, I drink a coffee.
Το μάθημα αρχίζει στις εννέα.The lesson starts at nine.
Μετά το μάθημα, πηγαίνω στη βιβλιοθήκη.After the lesson, I go to the library.
Πρώτα διαβάζω και μετά γράφω.First I read and then I write.
Αργότερα, συναντώ τη Μαρία.Later, I meet Maria.
Τώρα πρέπει να φύγω. Τα λέμε μετά!Now I have to leave. See you later!

Name the reference point

Πριν από το μάθημα means before the lesson. Μετά το μάθημα means after the lesson. Both expressions need the listener to know which lesson you mean. Compare πριν από τη δουλειά, before work, and μετά τη δουλειά, after work. Keep the noun and article together when you learn the phrase.

Use then without repeating the noun

In Πρώτα διαβάζω και μετά γράφω, πρώτα means first and μετά means then. Here μετά does not introduce a noun: it connects the reading and writing activities. In Μετά το μάθημα, the same word introduces the reference point, the lesson. Translate the whole phrase instead of assigning one fixed English equivalent to every occurrence.

Do not invent a precise time

Αργότερα means later. It places the meeting with Maria after an earlier point in the routine but gives no clock time. The only exact start time stated is nine, for the lesson. Neither the lesson’s end time nor the meeting time is specified. If you need the time, ask Τι ώρα; — “What time?”

Recognise a conversational ending

Τώρα means now. Πρέπει να φύγω means “I have to leave”. Τα λέμε μετά! is a conversational “See you later!” or “Talk to you later!” It does not by itself schedule a meeting. Keep an informal farewell separate from an agreed appointment with a day, time and place.

Check the order

  1. Does the coffee come before or after the lesson?
  2. What starts at nine?
  3. Which activity comes first: reading or writing?
  4. Does αργότερα tell us Maria’s meeting time?
See the answers

1. Before the lesson. 2. The lesson. 3. Reading comes first. 4. No; it means later, without an exact time.

Build a new sequence

Write a three-step plan: first read, then write, and later meet Maria. A possible version is Πρώτα διαβάζω. Μετά γράφω. Αργότερα συναντώ τη Μαρία. Now place coffee after the lesson with Μετά το μάθημα, πίνω έναν καφέ. This changes the original routine: check that you have changed the position of the activity deliberately.

Practise how often: always, often and sometimes.
