Greek Future Tense: θα πάω or θα πηγαίνω?

A calendar can help you explain how you are presenting a future activity. Compare one planned visit with a recurring routine, then choose the form that fits the viewpoint requested. This worksheet develops the future-tense reference through an original planning task.

Read Anna’s two plans

Αύριο θα πάω στη βιβλιοθήκη για να επιστρέψω ένα βιβλίο.Tomorrow I will go to the library to return a book.
Από την επόμενη εβδομάδα θα πηγαίνω στη βιβλιοθήκη κάθε Τρίτη για να διαβάζω.From next week I will go to the library every Tuesday to study.

Compare the viewpoint

The first plan presents tomorrow’s visit as a whole: θα πάω. The second describes a future routine: θα πηγαίνω. Both refer to the future; the difference here is how the activity is viewed. This does not make every short form of πάω a future tense: without θα, πάω can also be present.

Do not choose by counting alone

Θα πάω στη βιβλιοθήκη τρεις φορές την επόμενη εβδομάδα.

I will go to the library three times next week. This can present three visits as a bounded set. More than one occurrence does not automatically require θα πηγαίνω. Context matters: distinguish a recurring routine from events grouped together as a whole.

Check the plans

  1. Which plan is about returning a book?
  2. On which day will Anna study regularly from next week?
  3. Which form presents the future routine: θα πάω or θα πηγαίνω?
  4. Does the second plan say when the weekly routine will end?
Answers

1. Tomorrow’s visit. 2. Tuesday: κάθε Τρίτη. 3. Θα πηγαίνω. 4. No. It gives a starting point, not an end date.

Write for a specified purpose

A: present tomorrow’s visit as one whole event: Αύριο ___ στη βιβλιοθήκη. B: describe an ongoing weekly routine: Από τον επόμενο μήνα ___ στη βιβλιοθήκη κάθε Παρασκευή. Use θα πάω and θα πηγαίνω once each.

Suggested choices

Α. Αύριο θα πάω στη βιβλιοθήκη. Β. Από τον επόμενο μήνα θα πηγαίνω στη βιβλιοθήκη κάθε Παρασκευή.

A uses θα πάω. B uses θα πηγαίνω for the routine specified in the instruction. These are choices for the stated meanings, not a rule that αύριο or κάθε always forces one form regardless of context.

Make a plan of your own

Write one sentence about a specific future visit, then a second about a routine you plan to start. Underline the future forms and circle the time phrases. Explain which sentence presents an event as a whole and which presents a routine. You can use the library examples without claiming these are your real plans.
