Greek Opposites in Sentences: Open, Closed, Near and Far

Opposite words are easier to remember when they change a useful message. The examples below come in pairs: one says a shop is open, the other says it is closed. They are alternative descriptions, not statements about the same place at the same moment. Read each pair and identify exactly what changes.

Compare four pairs

Το μαγαζί είναι ανοιχτό.The shop is open.
Το μαγαζί είναι κλειστό.The shop is closed.
Το δωμάτιο είναι μεγάλο.The room is big.
Το δωμάτιο είναι μικρό.The room is small.
Ο σταθμός είναι κοντά.The station is near.
Ο σταθμός είναι μακριά.The station is far away.
Το νερό είναι ζεστό.The water is warm/hot.
Το νερό είναι κρύο.The water is cold.

Change the information, not the whole sentence

Keep Το μαγαζί είναι… and replace ανοιχτό with κλειστό. Both describe the shop’s state. The sentence does not tell us its opening hours, so do not add a reopening time. With Το δωμάτιο είναι…, changing μεγάλο to μικρό changes the room’s size. A small room is not necessarily a bad room; the pair describes size rather than quality.

Watch the noun and adjective together

The examples use neuter nouns: το μαγαζί, το δωμάτιο and το νερό. The adjective forms match those nouns. Compare a feminine example: Η πόρτα είναι ανοιχτή — “The door is open”; Η πόρτα είναι κλειστή — “The door is closed”. Do not put ανοιχτό after every noun just because it appears in the first pair.

Near and far work differently

Κοντά and μακριά describe distance here. Unlike the adjective forms above, these adverbs do not change to agree with the noun: Ο σταθμός είναι κοντά and Η στάση είναι κοντά mean the station is near and the stop is near. The examples do not give a number of metres or a walking time. Ask for details instead of treating near as an exact measurement.

Use the context for temperature

Ζεστό can describe warm or hot water, depending on context; κρύο describes cold water. This language exercise gives no measured temperature. In a café, the question Ζεστό ή κρύο; asks “Hot or cold?” Notice how the same contrast becomes a choice when it is asked as a question.

Check the contrasts

  1. Which word changes open to closed in Το μαγαζί είναι…?
  2. Complete “The door is open”: Η πόρτα είναι ___.
  3. Does κοντά change when you replace ο σταθμός with η στάση?
  4. Does the water sentence give an exact temperature?
See the answers

1. κλειστό. 2. ανοιχτή. 3. No; κοντά stays the same in these sentences. 4. No; there is no numerical temperature.

Change one detail

Write one sentence from each pair, then change only the opposite word. Read the original and changed versions aloud. Next, describe a door instead of a shop and check the adjective ending. Finish with two questions: Το μαγαζί είναι ανοιχτό; and Ο σταθμός είναι κοντά; Give an answer that matches the question instead of guessing an opening time or distance.

Practise describing rooms and furniture.
