Greek Airport Vocabulary: Read a Departure Board and Gate Change

An airport update can change one detail without changing the others. This fictional flight entry and gate-change message are a reading exercise, not live travel information. Read the labels before interpreting the numbers.

Read the entry and update

Πτήση: GF123Flight: GF123
Προορισμός: ΑθήναDestination: Athens
Αναχώρηση: 16:40Departure: 16:40
Πύλη: Β12Gate: B12
Η πύλη άλλαξε. Η νέα πύλη είναι η Β14.The gate has changed. The new gate is B14.
Η ώρα αναχώρησης παραμένει η ίδια.The departure time remains the same.

Identify the fields

Η πτήση means flight; ο προορισμός means destination; η αναχώρηση means departure; η πύλη means gate. GF123 is an invented flight identifier. Αθήνα is the destination, not the airport of departure. The example does not identify the departure airport.

Follow the change

Η πύλη άλλαξε means “The gate has changed”. The new gate is Β14, replacing Β12. The Greek letter Β looks like the Latin B; here it belongs to a printed gate label. Η ώρα αναχώρησης παραμένει η ίδια explicitly keeps the time unchanged. The update does not announce a delay or cancellation.

Ask a useful question

Πού είναι η πύλη Β14; asks “Where is gate B14?”. Η πτήση φεύγει στην ώρα της; asks whether the flight leaves on time. The first asks for location; the second asks about punctuality. If you miss the answer, say Μπορείτε να το επαναλάβετε; — “Can you repeat it?”.

Departure is not boarding

Η επιβίβαση means boarding. The example gives a departure time but no boarding time or arrival time. Do not infer those missing details from 16:40. Οι αναχωρήσεις means departures and οι αφίξεις means arrivals: check which board you are reading.

Check the details

  1. What is the fictional flight number?
  2. What is the new gate?
  3. What departure time remains valid in the exercise?
  4. Does the text give a boarding time?
See the answers

1. GF123. 2. B14. 3. 16:40. 4. No; departure and boarding are different.

Write another update

Rewrite the update with Β16 as the new gate, keeping the time unchanged. Then ask Πού είναι η πύλη Β16; The updated line gives the gate number but not directions to reach it. Explain that distinction before adding any invented information.
