How to Take a Taxi in Greek: Destination, Time and Payment

A short taxi conversation needs a clear destination, not a long speech. This fictional dialogue practises confirming the train station, asking about journey time and requesting a drop-off point. The time and payment answer belong only to the invented exchange; they are not facts about a real route or taxi service.

Read the taxi dialogue

Καλημέρα! Στον σταθμό των τρένων, παρακαλώ.Good morning! To the train station, please.
Στον κεντρικό σταθμό;To the central station?
Ναι. Πόση ώρα θα πάρει περίπου;Yes. Approximately how long will it take?
Περίπου είκοσι λεπτά.About twenty minutes.
Μπορώ να πληρώσω με κάρτα;Can I pay by card?
Ναι, βεβαίως.Yes, of course.
Μπορείτε να με αφήσετε στην είσοδο;Can you drop me off at the entrance?
Ναι.Yes.

Give and confirm the destination

Στον σταθμό των τρένων, παρακαλώ asks for the train station. The driver checks Στον κεντρικό σταθμό; — “To the central station?”. The passenger confirms with Ναι. Do not skip the confirmation when a city has several stations. For a hotel, you can say Σε αυτό το ξενοδοχείο, παρακαλώ — “To this hotel, please” — while showing its name and address.

Ask for duration, not a clock time

Πόση ώρα θα πάρει περίπου; asks approximately how long the journey will take. Είκοσι λεπτά means twenty minutes, a duration. It is not twenty o’clock. Περίπου means approximately, so the answer is an estimate rather than a guarantee. The dialogue gives no departure time and therefore no exact arrival time.

Ask about payment explicitly

Μπορώ να πληρώσω με κάρτα; means “Can I pay by card?”. Με κάρτα means by card; με μετρητά means in cash. The driver says yes in this exercise. This does not establish a rule for every taxi. If you want to ask the price, use Πόσο θα κοστίσει περίπου; — “Approximately how much will it cost?”. No fare is quoted in the dialogue.

Request a drop-off point

Μπορείτε να με αφήσετε στην είσοδο; politely asks to be dropped off at the entrance. Μπορείτε is the polite or plural form. The sentence identifies a desired point; in a real conversation the driver may need to explain where stopping is possible. Practise recognising the answer rather than treating your request as a completed action.

Check the journey details

  1. Which station does the passenger confirm?
  2. Does είκοσι λεπτά give a duration or a clock time?
  3. What payment method does the passenger ask about?
  4. Does the dialogue state the fare?
See the answers

1. The central train station. 2. A duration: twenty minutes. 3. Card payment. 4. No; no price is given.

Change the destination

Replace the destination with a hotel and keep the duration question: Σε αυτό το ξενοδοχείο, παρακαλώ. Πόση ώρα θα πάρει περίπου; Then ask about cash using Μπορώ να πληρώσω με μετρητά; Invent a reply, but keep it separate from the original dialogue. Finish with the request to stop at the entrance.

Other useful taxi phrases

The dialogue starts once you are in the car. These phrases cover hailing the taxi, other destinations and the end of the ride:

  • Είστε ελεύθερος; — Are you free? (to a driver at a taxi rank)
  • Στο αεροδρόμιο, παρακαλώ. — To the airport, please.
  • Με πηγαίνετε σε αυτή τη διεύθυνση; — Will you take me to this address? (while showing it)
  • Μπορείτε να σταματήσετε εδώ; — Can you stop here?
  • Εδώ είναι καλά, ευχαριστώ. — Here is fine, thank you.
  • Μπορώ να έχω απόδειξη; — Can I have a receipt?

Common mistakes

  • Θέλω πάω στο λιμάνι. → Θέλω να πάω στο λιμάνι.: after θέλω, the next verb needs να.
  • Πόσο ώρα θα πάρει; → Πόση ώρα θα πάρει;: ώρα is feminine, so “how much time” is πόση ώρα.
  • Μπορείτε να με αφήνετε στην είσοδο; → Μπορείτε να με αφήσετε στην είσοδο;: for one specific drop-off, Greek uses the one-off form αφήσετε, not the ongoing αφήνετε.
