A useful message makes one thing clear: a plan, a change or a question. You do not need slang or abbreviations to write a natural beginner message. The fictional exchange below confirms a meeting, reports a delay and asks for the café’s location. Practise with invented details.
A short message exchange
| Γεια σου! Θα βρεθούμε στις έξι; | Hi! Shall we meet at six? |
| Ναι, στο καφέ δίπλα στον σταθμό. | Yes, at the café next to the station. |
| Θα αργήσω δέκα λεπτά. Συγγνώμη! | I’ll be ten minutes late. Sorry! |
| Κανένα πρόβλημα. Σε περιμένω. | No problem. I’m waiting for you. |
| Μπορείς να μου στείλεις την τοποθεσία; | Can you send me the location? |
| Βεβαίως! | Of course! |
Confirm the plan
Θα βρεθούμε στις έξι; asks about meeting at six. Keep the day or context clear in a real conversation; the short exchange here does not state a date. If you need to add tomorrow, write Θα βρεθούμε αύριο στις έξι; A question needs an answer before you treat the arrangement as agreed.
Report a delay clearly
Θα αργήσω δέκα λεπτά means “I’ll be ten minutes late”. Δέκα λεπτά is a duration, not a clock time. Compare στις έξι, “at six”, with δέκα λεπτά, “ten minutes”. For a different practice delay, write Θα αργήσω πέντε λεπτά. Add Συγγνώμη if you want to apologise.
Ask for the missing detail
Μπορείς να μου στείλεις την τοποθεσία; asks the other person to send the location. It is an informal singular request. A polite or plural form is Μπορείτε να μου στείλετε την τοποθεσία; You can also ask Πού ακριβώς είναι το καφέ; — “Where exactly is the café?”
Keep beginner messages readable
Use Greek letters and the stress marks you are learning. The Greek question mark looks like a semicolon: ;. Γεια σου! is a friendly singular greeting. Γεια σας! suits a polite or plural greeting. Short complete sentences are enough; you do not need to imitate abbreviations before you understand the full forms.
Check the message meaning
- What meeting time is confirmed?
- Does δέκα λεπτά mean a ten-minute delay or ten o’clock?
- What does the sender ask to receive?
- Does the exchange explicitly give the date?
See the answers
1. Six: στις έξι. 2. A ten-minute delay. 3. The location: την τοποθεσία. 4. No. Add a day or date when the context does not make it clear.
Write three messages
Write a message confirming tomorrow at seven, a second reporting a five-minute delay and a third asking for the location. A possible start is Θα βρεθούμε αύριο στις επτά; Read your messages aloud and check that a reader can distinguish the meeting time from the delay. Use imaginary places and send nothing during the exercise.
Practise arranging a coffee meeting. Review numbers and time expressions.
