Greek Frequency Words: Describe How Often You Do Something

A sentence can tell someone what you do without saying how often. Frequency words add that missing detail. Read the six statements about an imaginary person’s habits, then change them to describe an invented routine of your own. Keep the action and frequency separate: reading often does not mean reading every day.

Read six habits

Πάντα πίνω νερό το πρωί.I always drink water in the morning.
Συνήθως πηγαίνω στη δουλειά με το λεωφορείο.I usually go to work by bus.
Συχνά διαβάζω το βράδυ.I often read in the evening.
Μερικές φορές βλέπω μια ταινία.Sometimes I watch a film.
Σπάνια τρώω έξω.I rarely eat out.
Δεν πίνω ποτέ καφέ το βράδυ.I never drink coffee in the evening.

Choose a frequency, not an exact number

Πάντα means always; συνήθως means usually; συχνά means often. Μερικές φορές means sometimes and σπάνια means rarely. These expressions do not give an exact weekly count. If you need a count, say δύο φορές την εβδομάδα, twice a week. Do not translate συχνά as a fixed number of days.

Build a negative statement with never

In the last sentence, δεν makes the verb negative and ποτέ supplies the meaning never: Δεν πίνω ποτέ καφέ το βράδυ. Keep both in this pattern. The sentence refers to evening coffee, not coffee at every time of day. For a broader statement, Δεν πίνω ποτέ καφέ means “I never drink coffee”.

Ask how often

Πόσο συχνά διαβάζεις; asks “How often do you read?” A short answer is Συχνά or Μερικές φορές. You can answer with a full sentence: Διαβάζω συχνά το βράδυ. In these examples the frequency word can appear before or after the verb. Notice the difference between Πόσο συχνά; (how often?) and Πότε; (when?).

Keep the detail that limits the claim

Το πρωί means in the morning; το βράδυ means in the evening. They describe when, while πάντα and συχνά describe frequency. The first sentence says water is always part of the morning routine. The fifth says eating out is rare, not impossible. Avoid replacing rarely with never when you retell the routine.

Check the meaning

  1. Which word means usually?
  2. Does συχνά specify exactly three times a week?
  3. Does the last sentence exclude coffee at every time of day?
  4. Complete the negative statement: ___ πίνω ποτέ καφέ.
See the answers

1. συνήθως. 2. No; it means often without an exact count. 3. No; it specifies the evening. 4. Δεν.

Change the routine

Write three sentences using different frequency expressions. Start with Συνήθως διαβάζω το βράδυ, then change only the frequency to Σπάνια. Finally write a sentence with Δεν … ποτέ. Ask a partner Πόσο συχνά διαβάζεις; or answer the question yourself. Check that each answer describes frequency, not only a time of day.

Practise talking about hobbies.
