These four lyric-style lines were written for this guide. They are not lyrics from a published song or a quotation from an artist. Read them aloud; no recording accompanies this activity.
Read four original lines
Θυμάμαι το μικρό μας σπίτι.
Κοιτάζω τώρα τη θάλασσα.
Σου γράφω πάλι «σ’ αγαπώ».
Μα πότε θα σε δω;
I remember our little house. / I am looking at the sea now. / I write “I love you” to you again. / But when will I see you?
Connect words with meanings

The noun and verb pairs share meaning, not necessarily a stem. Σ’ αγαπώ shortens σε αγαπώ: the apostrophe marks an omitted vowel. Σου γράφω means “I write to you”; θα σε δω means “I will see you”.
Check the text before interpreting it
- What does the speaker remember?
- What is the speaker looking at now?
- Which expression explicitly communicates love?
- Do the lines say when the two people will meet?
Answers
1. Their little house. 2. The sea. 3. σ’ αγαπώ. 4. No: the final line asks when. Neither person’s gender nor the reason for their separation is specified.
Suggest a feeling without inventing a story
The final question may suggest longing. Try Ίσως υπάρχει νοσταλγία. — Perhaps there is nostalgia. Ίσως marks an interpretation, not a fact stated in the text. The lines do not establish that the speaker lives on an island.
Turn the lines into a message
Keep the house, the sea and the question about meeting, but write a short everyday message without line breaks or rhyme. Then replace the sea with the city and read your version aloud.
One possible message
Θυμάμαι το μικρό μας σπίτι. Τώρα κοιτάζω τη θάλασσα και σου γράφω. Πότε θα σε δω;
This is an original teaching example. Remembering a place does not mean looking at it now: compare θυμάμαι with κοιτάζω.
