Greek listening for beginners: four short everyday exchanges

Start by identifying what a short phrase does: greet, thank or ask how someone is. These four clips come from the free A1 greetings activity. They are separate utterances, not one conversation. Listen before opening the transcripts. Recognising them is a small practice task, not a complete listening-level assessment.

Before you press play

Read the four questions below so you know what to listen for. Play each numbered clip once and write a tentative answer. Replay only the clip you need to check. If you cannot hear the audio, the transcripts in the answer section let you use the page as reading practice instead; that is a different task.

Answer from what you hear

  1. Clip 1: is this a morning greeting or a phrase used before going to bed?
  2. Clip 2: is the speaker thanking someone or apologising? Which reply fits: Παρακαλώ or Καληνύχτα?
  3. Clip 3: after the greeting, does the speaker ask how you are or what your name is?
  4. Clip 4: does this fit saying good night before bed or greeting someone in the morning?
Answers and Greek transcripts

1. Καλημέρα! — Good morning. The clip contains a morning greeting.

2. Ευχαριστώ πολύ! — Thank you very much. Παρακαλώ is an appropriate “you’re welcome” response here.

3. Γεια σου! Τι κάνεις; — Hi! How are you? The question is not asking for your name.

4. Καληνύχτα! — Good night. It fits a farewell before sleep; it is not the same greeting as καλημέρα.

Use the transcript after your attempt

Compare your answer with the words you actually hear. If you confused thanks and apology, replay clip 2 while reading Ευχαριστώ πολύ, then hide the text and try again. If clips 1 and 4 sounded similar, compare their endings rather than treating both as a generic greeting. Keep the question mark in Τι κάνεις; when you copy the transcript.

Turn listening into a response

After clip 2, say Παρακαλώ. After clip 3, try Καλά, ευχαριστώ. You can practise the response after the clip ends, without trying to speak over it. Then replay one clip out of order and choose a response without reading. Record which distinction you still need to check; replaying a familiar clip is not evidence that every new voice will be equally easy.
