Describe Your Home in Greek: Rooms, Furniture and Where Things Are

A list of furniture names becomes useful when you can say where things are. In this beginner activity, read a short description of an imaginary home, draw a simple plan and locate four objects. The text gives only some details: do not assume a window, balcony or extra room that it never mentions.

Read the home description

Το σπίτι έχει δύο υπνοδωμάτια.The house has two bedrooms.
Το σαλόνι είναι δίπλα στην κουζίνα.The living room is next to the kitchen.
Στο σαλόνι υπάρχει ένας καναπές.There is a sofa in the living room.
Το τραπέζι είναι μπροστά στον καναπέ.The table is in front of the sofa.
Η λάμπα είναι πάνω στο τραπέζι.The lamp is on the table.
Τα βιβλία είναι κάτω από το τραπέζι.The books are under the table.
Το μπάνιο είναι απέναντι από την κουζίνα.The bathroom is opposite the kitchen.

Learn rooms with their articles

Keep the article with each room: το σπίτι (house or home), το υπνοδωμάτιο (bedroom), το σαλόνι (living room), η κουζίνα (kitchen), το μπάνιο (bathroom). The sentence has δύο υπνοδωμάτια, two bedrooms: the ending changes in the plural. Do not turn the two bedrooms into two rooms altogether; the description also names other rooms.

Locate an object

Πού είναι η λάμπα; asks “Where is the lamp?” Answer Η λάμπα είναι πάνω στο τραπέζι: the lamp is on the table. Compare κάτω από το τραπέζι, under the table. The books, not the lamp, are there in this description. Draw both objects before moving on; this checks whether you understand the position words rather than merely recognise the nouns.

Connect rooms and furniture

Δίπλα στην κουζίνα means next to the kitchen. Μπροστά στον καναπέ means in front of the sofa. Απέναντι από την κουζίνα means opposite the kitchen. Learn these as short phrases: στην and στον combine σε with an article. Their different endings belong to the nouns that follow; they are not interchangeable labels for the same location.

Distinguish existence from location

Στο σαλόνι υπάρχει ένας καναπές introduces something: there is a sofa in the living room. Το τραπέζι είναι μπροστά στον καναπέ locates a particular table. For more than one item, use Υπάρχουν δύο καρέκλες — “There are two chairs”. This is an extra practice sentence, not a fact stated about the imaginary home.

Check the description

  1. How many bedrooms are mentioned?
  2. Which room is next to the kitchen?
  3. Where are the lamp and the books?
  4. Does the description say there is a balcony?
See the answers

1. Two bedrooms. 2. The living room. 3. The lamp is on the table; the books are under it. 4. No; a balcony is not mentioned.

Draw and change the plan

Sketch the rooms and objects using only the information in the text. Then change two positions: put the books on the table and the lamp next to the sofa. Write Τα βιβλία είναι πάνω στο τραπέζι and Η λάμπα είναι δίπλα στον καναπέ. Read both versions aloud and explain what changed. You can invent a home instead of describing your own.

Practise introducing yourself in Greek.
