Understand Spoken Greek: Hear Words in Connected Speech

A sentence can feel fast when you try to identify every word separately. Practise finding a few meaningful groups in two short recordings. These existing generated teaching clips are played at their original speed; this is not a claim that they represent every speaker or real-world speaking rate.

Listen for the message first

Clip 1 states a restaurant total. Clip 2 states the day of a lesson. Listen once and write the amount or day before opening the transcript. Replay if needed, keeping your first answer so you can see what changed.

Check what you understood

  1. In clip 1, is the euro amount eighteen or eighty?
  2. Which word joins the euro amount to the cents: και or αλλά?
  3. In clip 2, is the lesson on Tuesday or Thursday?
  4. Do you need a silent pause between every written word to understand the sentence?
Answers and complete transcripts

Όλα μαζί κάνουν δεκαοκτώ ευρώ και πενήντα λεπτά.

Το μάθημα είναι την Τρίτη.

1. Eighteen. 2. Και — and. 3. Tuesday, Τρίτη. 4. No. Written spaces do not require silent gaps in speech.

Reveal the words and group them

The slashes below are visual study aids. They show useful meaning groups, not measured pauses or a phonetic transcription of the recording.

Όλα μαζί / κάνουν / δεκαοκτώ ευρώ / και πενήντα λεπτά.

Το μάθημα / είναι / την Τρίτη.

In the first sentence, Όλα μαζί introduces the total, κάνουν connects it to the amount, and the final groups give euros and cents. In the second, Το μάθημα identifies the lesson and την Τρίτη supplies the day. This helps you listen for a function rather than wait for an isolated dictionary word.

Listen again without inventing pauses

Listen to one complete clip while following the groups. Cover the text and listen again. Mark the group where you lost the thread, then reopen just that part. Do not add a pause after every slash when you repeat the sentence: the grouping is for understanding, not a requirement to change the recorded rhythm.

Transfer the method to another message

Return to the other clip without its transcript. Identify the topic first and the detail second. If the day or amount is still unclear, write a question mark rather than filling it from memory. Your goal is to recover information from this recording, not to claim that you now understand any fast conversation.

Choose a focused next step

Keep one note: “I recognised the topic but missed…” or “I confused these two words…”. Choose number listening if the amount was the problem, or the pronunciation comparison task if you want to work on your own production. Listening segmentation and speaking accuracy are related activities, but this exercise does not score either.
