How to Order Coffee in Greek: Café Dialogue and Phrases

Knowing how to ask for coffee is useful, but the next question can be the difficult part. This beginner guide rehearses a short exchange: choose the drink, say how you want it, and answer whether you are staying or taking it away. Read both sides of the conversation so you recognise what the person serving you may ask.

A short conversation at the counter

ServerΚαλημέρα! Τι θα θέλατε;Good morning! What would you like?
CustomerΈναν καφέ, παρακαλώ.A coffee, please.
ServerΕλληνικό ή εσπρέσο;Greek coffee or espresso?
CustomerΈναν ελληνικό, σκέτο, παρακαλώ.A Greek coffee without sugar, please.
ServerΕδώ ή για έξω;Here or to go?
CustomerΓια έξω, παρακαλώ.To go, please.
ServerΚάτι άλλο;Anything else?
CustomerΌχι, ευχαριστώ. Πόσο κάνει;No, thank you. How much is it?

Build your order in three parts

Start with Έναν…, add the drink, then παρακαλώ. In this order, καφέ and ελληνικό refer to a masculine object and follow έναν. You can also begin with Θα ήθελα… (“I would like…”). You do not need a long sentence to order politely.

  • Έναν εσπρέσο, παρακαλώ. — An espresso, please.
  • Θα ήθελα έναν ελληνικό, παρακαλώ. — I would like a Greek coffee, please.
  • Έναν καφέ χωρίς ζάχαρη, παρακαλώ. — A coffee without sugar, please.

Understand the follow-up

In this coffee context, σκέτο asks for no sugar. Χωρίς ζάχαρη states “without sugar” explicitly. Εδώ means “here”; για έξω means “to go”. The question Κάτι άλλο; is an invitation to add something, so Όχι, ευχαριστώ is a complete, polite answer.

If you miss a question

Say Μπορείτε να το πείτε πιο αργά; — “Can you say it more slowly?” You can also check a word: Για έξω; — “To go?” Practise asking for clarification as well as placing the order.

Your turn: choose a response

  1. You want an espresso. Complete: Έναν ___, παρακαλώ.
  2. You want no sugar. Which phrase is explicit: χωρίς ζάχαρη or με ζάχαρη?
  3. You hear Εδώ ή για έξω; and want takeaway. What do you say?
  4. You hear Κάτι άλλο; and want nothing more. What do you say?
Check possible answers

1. εσπρέσο. 2. χωρίς ζάχαρη. 3. Για έξω, παρακαλώ. 4. Όχι, ευχαριστώ. Other polite responses are possible; these match the dialogue.

Practise a different version

Read the server’s lines and answer without looking at the translation. Repeat with an espresso instead of Greek coffee, then change your answer to Εδώ, παρακαλώ. Finally, insert the clarification phrase before answering. The aim is to respond to the question, not recite the whole dialogue from memory.

Other ways to order coffee

Έναν καφέ, παρακαλώ works almost everywhere. These variants make the request fuller, more everyday or more precise:

  • Θα ήθελα έναν καπουτσίνο, παρακαλώ. — I would like a cappuccino, please (full and polite).
  • Μου δίνετε έναν φρέντο εσπρέσο; — Could I have a freddo espresso? (a very common everyday request).
  • Έναν ελληνικό μέτριο, παρακαλώ. — A Greek coffee with medium sugar, please.
  • Έναν ελληνικό γλυκό, παρακαλώ. — A sweet Greek coffee, please.
  • Δύο καφέδες, παρακαλώ. — Two coffees, please.
  • Και ένα νερό, παρακαλώ. — And a water, please.

For Greek coffee, σκέτο, μέτριο and γλυκό are the three usual sugar levels: none, medium and sweet. With friends you can say σε παρακαλώ; with staff you do not know, παρακαλώ on its own is polite.

Common mistakes

  • Δύο καφές → Δύο καφέδες: the plural of ο καφές is οι καφέδες.
  • Ένα καφέ → Έναν καφέ: you will hear the short form in speech, but καφές is masculine and the careful written form is έναν.
  • Answering Εδώ ή για έξω; with Ναι → choose one option: Εδώ or Για έξω.
