The plural of nouns
Six endings cover almost everything: -οι, -ες, -α, -ια, -ματα — with the article changing along.
The basic patterns
The singular ending decides the plural one. These five rows cover the vast majority of A1 vocabulary.
- ο δρόμος — οι δρόμοιthe street — the streets
- η θάλασσα — οι θάλασσεςthe sea — the seas
- το παιδί — τα παιδιάthe child — the children
| ενικός | πληθυντικός | παράδειγμα |
|---|---|---|
| αρσενικό σε -ος | -οι | ο δρόμος → οι δρόμοι |
| αρσενικό σε -ας / -ης | -ες | ο άντρας → οι άντρες |
| πολλά θηλυκά σε -α / -η | -ες | η μέρα → οι μέρες |

The -μα neuters
A big, very regular family: the plural adds -τα. το όνομα → τα ονόματα, το μάθημα → τα μαθήματα, το πρόβλημα → τα προβλήματα.
- το όνομα → τα ονόματαthe name → the names
- το μάθημα → τα μαθήματαthe lesson → the lessons
- το πρόβλημα → τα προβλήματαthe problem → the problems
The stress can move
A few very common words move their stress in the plural: ο άνθρωπος → οι άνθρωποι, ο δάσκαλος → οι δάσκαλοι, while η θάλασσα → οι θάλασσες keeps its own. When unsure, listen — the Greek ear does it automatically.
- το μάθημα → τα μαθήματαthe lesson → the lessons (the accent moves)
- ο άνθρωπος → οι άνθρωποιthe person → the people (the accent stays)
- η πόλη → οι πόλειςthe city → the cities
- ο παππούς → οι παππούδεςthe grandfather → the grandfathers
