Να πάρω or να παίρνω? Express a choice or habit in Greek

After να, the verb can present an action as a whole or as an ongoing or recurring activity. Use two transport plans to practise the difference. The task is to express the intended meaning, not to choose an ending from a time word alone.

Read two intentions

Σήμερα θέλω να πάρω το λεωφορείο για το μουσείο.Today I want to take the bus to the museum.
Θέλω να παίρνω το λεωφορείο για τη δουλειά κάθε μέρα.I want to take the bus to work every day.

The museum trip is presented as one whole action with να πάρω. The work journey is presented as a desired routine with να παίρνω. Both sentences describe intentions; neither proves that the speaker has already made the journey.

Keep the expression together

θέλω να πάρω / θέλω να παίρνω

In both examples, the person who wants something is also the person who would take the bus. Πάρω is not a past-tense form meaning “I took”; the past form is πήρα. Nor does να automatically mean future tense. Here it introduces the action connected to θέλω.

Change the purpose of the message

If you ask for help with today’s museum visit, specify the destination and the single trip. If you explain a commuting habit you would like to establish, specify the routine. The verb form supports that distinction. Do not treat every repeated event as obligatorily non-perfective: a bounded set can also be presented as a whole.

Check the two intentions

  1. Which intention concerns a museum visit?
  2. Which destination belongs to the daily routine?
  3. Which form presents the desired habit: να πάρω or να παίρνω?
  4. Do these sentences confirm that the journeys have happened?
Answers

1. The first, about today’s visit. 2. Work: τη δουλειά. 3. Να παίρνω. 4. No. They express what the speaker wants.

Choose for the stated meaning

A: present a particular trip you want to make today: Θέλω ___ το λεωφορείο σήμερα. B: express the routine you want to establish: Θέλω ___ το λεωφορείο κάθε πρωί. Use να πάρω and να παίρνω once each.

Suggested choices

Α. Θέλω να πάρω το λεωφορείο σήμερα. Β. Θέλω να παίρνω το λεωφορείο κάθε πρωί.

A presents the intended trip as a whole. B presents a recurring habit. The instructions establish these viewpoints; the examples are not universal rules attached to σήμερα or κάθε.

Write a pair of intentions

Write one transport choice for a specific occasion and one routine you would like to adopt. Keep the first-person forms while you practise the contrast. Explain which sentence focuses on an action as a whole and which focuses on a routine. Check that your translation still expresses wanting, rather than claiming the journey is completed.
